Sodom and Gomorrah

Research project Manager Professor Steve Collins stated that this conclusion was made after serious research, conducted over 10 years at the site at tell El-Hammam.

According to Collins, archaeologists found the ruins of the ancient complex of the Bronze age belong to the large city-state, which was unknown to scientists until the beginning of his / her project.

“An archaeological team discovered a real “gold mine” of ancient monumental structures and artefacts”, quoted by Christian Today.

According to Collins, the comparison found the ruins with the remains of other ancient cities nearby, suggests a maximum matching on a number of criteria known about Sodom from the Bible. .

The land of the five cities

According to the old Testament, in the days of Abraham, Sodom was flourishing and rich city, but because the inhabitants “were wicked and sinners” (Genesis, Chapter 13, verse 13) “then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven, and overthrew these cities, and all okrestnostey, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and [all] grew upon the ground” (Genesis, Chapter 19, verses 24-25).

The Bible tells of the death of not two, but four of the five cities located near the Dead sea in the late XVIII century BC. Five city-States of Sodom, Gomorrah, ADMA, Zeboim and Bela (Zoar) formed a coalition, which was under the rule of the Union of the four kings of Mesopotamia, brutally Nakazawa their vassals for non-payment of tribute.

The Torah tells us that the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was that they starved the poor of their hunger, do and the unjust, the court refused the travellers hospitality.

The same is said of the prophet Ezekiel: “Behold, this was the iniquity of Sodom, thy sister and her daughters: pride, abundance and idleness, and she hands the poor and needy is not supported. “(The book of the prophet Ezekiel, Chapter 16, verse 49).

The Bible says that the anger of the Lord was caused by the sins of the inhabitants of these cities. God declared to Abraham that Sodom will be destroyed, but after the prayer of Abraham the Lord promised not to destroy the city if there are ten righteous. The righteous is not found, and after rescuing angels of the family of the righteous Lot’s family of the town were destroyed by fire from heaven.

The search for a biblical “city of sin”

According to the Bible, the place where once Sodom, Gomorrah and three other cities, was like the garden of Eden. This information aroused the skepticism of scientists who know about the barren lands, adjacent to the Dead sea, and that Mesopotamia and the Jordan valley had no ways of communication.

In the early 1920s, the famous archaeologist Nelson Glueck discovered traces of ancient roads linking Mesopotamia and the Dead sea. Then the mention of this road was found in the texts of clay tablets from Mari.

First an assumption about the location of the biblical Sodom was made after the discovery in the town of Bab-ed-DRA is an ancient cemetery consisting of half a million graves. This discovery, made by archeologists in 1960 to the South of Bab-ed-DRA, allowed to conclude that the proximity of the city with a highly developed culture.

Found in and around three million pottery shards of ancient pottery with remains of wheat, rye, dates, plums, peaches, grapes, figs, pistachios, almonds, olives and other fruits allowed to determine that in the Bronze age these places was a true garden of Eden.

Another proof that discovered the city are those about whom the Bible says, the researchers saw in the medieval mosaic found in 1896 during the construction on the ruins of an old Byzantine Church, the Greek Orthodox monastery of St. George, located in Madaba in Jordan.

Mosaic known as the Madaba Map from, is a lined with millions of multi-colored stones giant map of the Holy land area of 93 square meters. To our days have survived the fourth part of the puzzle, but among other things it depicts a city, which is a signature: “Bela, she is Zoar”. The location map of Bela coincides exactly with Safi – one of five discovered in the Dead sea area the dead cities.

The hypothesis that Sodom and Gomorrah existed not in the West (Israeli) and Eastern (Jordanian) coast of the Dead sea, was launched by American scientists in the 90-ies of XX century.

It is accepted by most researchers hypothesis, the biblical Sodom was located on the southwest coast of the Dead sea.

Research in recent decades

During 1965-1967, 1973-1979 and was conducted five expeditions, but Sodom was not detected.

In 2000 the members of the British archaeological expedition under the leadership of Michael Sanders suggested that they were able to determine the exact position of the ruins of Sodom at the bottom of the Dead sea. The search was conducted in the North-Eastern area. This completely refutes the Bible based on the theory that Sodom was located at the southern tip of the Dead sea. The opening of the British scientists was based on Photographs of the American space Agency NASA, which recorded anomalies on the bottom of the Dead sea near the Jordan.

In December 2010 the Russian company has received the permission of the authorities of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to conduct exploration in the area defined as the expected locations of Sodom and Gomorrah. It was located near the ancient city Bab-ed-DRA, where, according to NASA Photography, could be concentrated ruins of cities. After that, in 2020, was organized by the joint Russian-Jordanian archaeological expedition. The Russian company was chosen for the project because of its stability in deep-water equipment to extremely salty water of the Dead sea.

About the reasons of destruction of cities scholars at different times have advanced different versions from the earthquake to the fall of a large meteorite .
